NOT SURE HOW TO PREP YOUR GOODS FOR STORAGE?

Updated: Feb 18, 2023

Moving out, settling into a new home, or finally moving to a new city are indeed some of the milestones that you achieve while adulting. But, the process can be extremely hectic, especially the shipping of goods! From your whole wardrobe, to your utensils, everything has to be in place, but how to do everything all by yourself? In these situations, storage units and warehouses can literally save the day.

But, that doesn’t make you all tension free! After all, these are your goods! You have to take care of them. You need to prepare your goods just the right way before sending them off to the warehouse. Confused about that? Don’t know how to go about it? Don’t worry, this blog will help you understand the most important and basic things that you need to know, before shipping your goods to the warehouse. So, without any further ado, let’s begin!

1. Cleaning:

Sounds basic? Yes, it is very basic, yet some people just completely ignore this! You need to clean your goods and disinfect them. Also, you need to dry them properly to make sure there is no moisture retention, which can harm your goods.

2. Cardboard boxes or plastic bins?:

Many people get confused between the choice of cardboard boxes and plastic bins. While both are good options to store, cardboard boxes are the best option if you are opting for short-term storage and plastic bins are the best if you are going for long term storage. So, you can choose accordingly.

3. Protection:

The storage unit will definitely take care of your belongings and valuables, but you need to be super careful from your end as well. Opt for bubble wrapping, or plastic wrapping. They are efficient enough to protect your goods in the face of extreme climatic conditions or moisture control.

4. Listing and Labelling :

Now, this might sound silly but you need to take a note of the things that you are moving to the warehouse, and this will ensure that nothing is misplaced in the process. Make sure to label your goods as fragile, furniture, clothes, documents accordingly to help the movers understand how to handle them.

5. Insurance check:

You need to check with the warehouse, what their insurance terms and policies are. You need to make sure that there is damage control, and reimbursement incase of any mishap. These accidents are very common, but having a good insurance policy acts in your favour.

6. Abide by the restrictions:

Every warehouse has some restrictions of its own, and they restrict you from sending some categories of goods. You need to make sure that you are asking for a list from them, so as to avoid any mistakes from your end. Every warehouse has a different system of working and storing and not every warehouse has climate control service. So, they avoid storing some special categories of goods, for long term storage. You need to know all these so that your goods are unharmed, and you can take necessary actions from your part.
